Here are a few of the rules pertaining to your question.
    Hope this helps you.

Rule 12-508 Bending and Stapling of Cable (see Appendix G)
The cable shall not be bent, handled, or stapled so that the insulated conductors or outer covering is damaged.

Rationale and Intent for Rule 12-508 . We intend that cables be handled in such a manner that the protective covering will not be injured. Cables shall not be handled or installed below ?10?C unless specifically indicated by the manufacturer. (See note to Appendix B in Rule 12-100.) To prevent damage to the cable, we intend that approved staples with stops be used to limit the depth of penetration. Staple fasteners are tested using one NMSC. Fence or poultry fencing staples are not permitted.

Rule 12-510 Running of Cable Between Boxes and Fittings
    (see Appendix G)
    (1) Where the cable is run between boxes and fittings, it shall be supported by straps or other devices located within 300 mm of every box or fitting and at intervals of not more than 1.5 m throughout the run.
Rationale and Intent for Rule 12-510(1) (see Figure 12-510). We intend that cables be protected by being supported in a manner that will not injure the cable. We intend that the cable be supported at intervals of not less than 1.5 m throughout the run and within 300 mm of a box or fitting, to support and prevent the cable from being pulled away from the box or connector.

    Rule 12-510(2)
Cables run through holes in joists or studs shall be considered to be supported.
Intent for Rule 12-510(2). We intend that cables be considered as supported when run through holes in joists or studs.

Rule 12-514 Protection on Joists and Rafters (see Appendix G)
Cables shall not be run on or across:
    (a) The upper faces of ceiling joists or the lower faces of rafters in attic or roof spaces, where the vertical distance between the joists and the rafters exceeds 1 m; or
    (b) The lower faces of basement joists, unless suitably protected from mechanical injury.
Rationale and Intent for Rule 12-514. We intend that cables not be run on or across the upper faces of joists in locations where the vertical separation between joists and rafters is greater than 1 m, or on the lower faces of basement joists, unless they are protected from mechanical injury. Suitable protection may be in the form of guards or running boards.
